Few questions divide used-car buyers like the choice of gearbox. In recent years the automatic has stopped being the exception — in city conditions it has become the standard — yet the manual still holds a significant share of the market. Below is a comparison by what can actually be measured: cost, driving and value at resale.
Driving and daily use
In city driving the automatic has no serious rival: queues, traffic lights and parking without constant clutch work make a difference the driver feels from day one. On the open road the gap narrows — modern automatics shift faster and more precisely than the average driver. The manual keeps its advantage with drivers who want full control of the vehicle and those towing a trailer over demanding terrain.
Purchase and maintenance costs
A used vehicle with an automatic is as a rule more expensive than the identical car with a manual, the difference depending on the vehicle class. For maintenance a simple rule applies: an automatic requires regular transmission-fluid changes per the manufacturer’s schedule — an orderly record of that change in the service history is a sign of serious upkeep. A manual is cheaper to maintain, but the clutch is a wear item whose replacement is not a negligible cost on most models.
Fuel consumption
The manual’s former advantage in consumption is now largely history: modern multi-speed automatics use as much fuel in real conditions, and in the city often less, because they shift at the optimal moment.
Resale value
Demand for automatics grows year on year, which translates directly into resale value — a vehicle with an automatic generally sells faster. The manual remains sought after in the smallest city classes, where the price difference matters most to buyers.
What to check on a used automatic
At a viewing an automatic must work imperceptibly: gears change smoothly, without jolts, slipping or hesitation when pulling away. Any rough behaviour is a reason for further checking before purchase. Depending on class and model, on our market the difference most often ranges from a few hundred to over a thousand euros for an identical vehicle. Part of that difference returns at resale, because demand for automatics is higher.
